From “Sex, Lies and Conversation; Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” it is evident that the absence of cross-culture understanding, particularly with regards to communication, is a leading cause of major marital conflicts in America today. Relationships between men and women in marriage is depicted as one that is fraught with many problems and arguments just because of the fact that members of either gender are not appropriately attuned to each other’s differing traits including the social and psychological attributes. This lack of skill in communication between the sexes especially in marriage is apparently brought about by the “systematic differences in childhood socialization making talk between women and men like cross-cultural communication.” (Maccoby 513-520).
On the other hand, the poem Ragazza presents circumstances that are entirely different from those depicted by Maccoby, in that talking between spouses is not given much prominence. In the poem, there is no indication of the need of much talk between husband and wife and as such, a good woman is one who will stick to her role as a wife without bothering to engage in much talk with her husband who is also represented as very much contented with the silence. While “Sex, Lies and Conversation; Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” insists that the key to happy marriage life together with meaningful interaction between men and women is in understanding how to communicate, Ragazza alludes to the fact that that there is no real need for much talk between a husband and his wife and the most important thing is carrying out the traditional husband and wife roles. A common thread in both works however, is the fact that compromise on character traits that cannot easily be changed but which one can albeit live with, is essential for all men and women especially in marriage.
